Tattoo Practice Skin

Not that long ago, new artists had to rely on orange peels or brave friends to practice their tattooing. These days, you can get true-to-life practice without permanently marking up yourself or your friends with beginner-quality work. Tattoo practice skins are the new go-to solution for newbie artists who need to hone their skills and for experienced artists experimenting with new techniques and machines.

About A Pound of Flesh

A Pound of Flesh leads the industry in producing the most realistic tattoo practice skins on the market. Their signature blend of silicone and rubber mimics the texture and give of real skin, and their 3D models are anatomically accurate, so your practice is as true to life as possible.

Types of Tattoo Practice Skin

From simple canvases to novelty tattooable guinea pigs, A Pound of Flesh does it all.

Sheets and Canvases

Sheets and canvases are flat pieces of fake tattoo skin that can range in size and thickness. They’re more affordable than 3D options, so they’re perfect for newbies who still need to master the basics. They also make perfect framable canvases for showcasing your art in the studio for potential clients.

Body Parts

From hands and feet to breasts and faces, these practice skins let you work with the curves and challenges of the body, so that you’ll be ready for the real deal.

Novelty Skins

Lighten up your practice with a little fun or add an eye-catching showcase piece to your shop with A Pound of Flesh’s novelty tattoo practice skins. From cutie dolls to hairless cats to good old-fashioned grapefruits, these novelty skins may not be “human,” but they look great inked up and give you the practice you need.

Differences in Practice Skin Size and Thickness Options

Practice skin canvases come in various dimensions and shapes from small, handheld ovals to huge 6.6’ x 5.9’ rectangles. The size you need depends on your purposes. Are you just practicing or hoping to showcase your work in your shop? Do you want to display a few flash tattoos as a larger backpiece?

You’ll also notice a range of thickness options, ranging from about 2 - 8mm, with most skins coming in around 2-3mm. This depth is sufficient to give you adequate practice, but if you’re hoping for an even more skin-like feel, we recommend going for the 5-8 mm range.

Practice Skin Care and Maintenance

If you want to use your practice skins as portfolio or showcase pieces, you’ll need to take extra care to keep them clean while tattooing. First, use plenty of petroleum jelly while you’re working to prevent smears and smudges. Second, dab (don’t wipe) the excess ink as wiping can create smears and tears in the practice skin. Once you’re done, clean up excess ink and any smudges using the same process: add some petroleum jelly and dab. That’s it! Your practice skins are naturally long-lasting and require virtually no maintenance.
